Notes for JOHN SHEPERD MAYBERRY:

Spent early years of grammar school with John Johnson, then grew up and went their different ways. John Mayberry grew up in the South during the civil war. It is known that as a brick layer, he helped build a large brick chimney at the copper mine in Ducktown, Tennessee. Also noted is that he had a fine set of handmade tools that when he died the tools went to his granddaughter Dollie's husband, Harry.

As a young man John enlisted at Benton, Polk County, Tennessee on September 28, 1862, Private Company B, 62nd Mounted Infantry. He fought in the Confederate Army and in one battle his cousin, who was standing next to him, was directly hit by a canon ball. When he received Army Pay he sent home to his wife, whom he had married at 19.

John's granddaughter, Ollie, remembers that he fought in the Civil War at the battle of Gettysburg on the Confederate side. He lived into his 90's and is buried at the Sunrise Baptist Cemetery near Kellyville, Oklahoma, with his wife and several of their children.

The Mayberry's moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1893 and settled in Potowatomie County, then lived in Atoka and Coal Counties before moving to Creek County. John married Roann after the war. They had their first two children in Tennessee, moved to Grayson County, Texas, and had seven more children.
